Kamalapuram, Dindigul

Kamala puram (காமலா புரம்) is a village in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, India. It was previously also called as 'Adaikkala matha puram' (அடைக்கல மாதா புரம், village of mary the refuge). It is located near to kodai Road (Kodaikanal road). This is an agricultural based village which resides on foot of the Sirumalai hills (famous for Sirmalai banana). This place is famous for Grapes. The village is famous for its church and the annual car festival.People in and around nearby cities participate in the annual festive event which takes place for two days during the month of June.The grapes produced here are sent across India and also exported.
Location:
This village is located at 16 km south from Dindigul (Dindigul-Madurai national highway 7). A state highway going to the west direction (to Palani, Coimbatore) branches out in this village. Sirumalai in the east, Jambudurai kottai in the west, Oothuppatti in the north and J.Mettur in the south are located from Kamalapuram.
People and profession:
Most of the people do agriculture, and in drought days migration of people is also seen to Tiruppur, Palladam and other areas. Grapes, Sabre beans (Avaraikkaai), Bitter guard, Snake guard, Flowers (rose, Kanagambaram, Jasmine) and Mullet are mainly farmed.
Schools:
1. Diraviam Girls higher secondary school is situated in this village.The school caters to all the girls in and around dindigul to get quality education.
2. Panchayat union middle school run by the state government
Religious places:
1. St.John the Baptist church- A catholic church attended by most of the residents
2. St. Arulanadar church- A small chapel in the north of the village
3. Annai Velankanni chapel-
4. St. Sebastian church (one in the middle and the other in the east side)
5. Lord Krishna temple
6. Temple for Veerapathra in the middle
Festivals:
1. Every year June 22–24, St. John the Baptist festival,
2. Every year September 8- St.Mary's festival,
3. January 20 and Feb. 4, St. Sebastian and De britto festivals,
4. January 12–16 Pongal festivals.
Facilities:
1. Numerous tea shops and snack stalls,
2. Two small sized hotels,
3. Small sized browsing center and a photo copy center,
4. No TASMAC shops but the items available in the hotels.
